NHL 2026-27 Season Preview: A Longer Schedule, a Returning All-Star Game, and a Cup Rematch on Night One

The NHL’s 2026-27 season drops the puck September 29 with a nationally televised tripleheader — and a few real structural changes worth knowing about.

The season is longer than it’s been in decades. The league expanded the regular season from 82 to 84 games, the longest schedule since 1992–94, specifically to balance out how many times each team plays its own division rivals after complaints from teams about uneven scheduling.

Opening night is a rematch. The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers, while the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights host the Chicago Blackhawks — two marquee matchups on the same night to open the year.

All-Star Weekend is back. After a two-year absence — bumped by the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025 and the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026 — the All-Star Game returns February 5–6, 2027, hosted by the New York Islanders, with the skills competition the night before the main event.

The season runs deep into spring, wrapping the regular season April 10, 2027, before the playoffs begin.

The bottom line: two extra games might sound minor, but paired with the All-Star Game’s return, it’s the most “back to a normal calendar” the NHL has looked in three years — no Olympic break, no international tournament eating into the schedule.
