It’s become a running assumption that ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are quietly killing off traditional search. The 2026 usage data tells a more complicated story.
The headline number: the overlap between ChatGPT users and Google users has stayed flat at 95% between September 2025 and May 2026 — even as AI usage climbed 70% year-over-year. In plain terms, people are overwhelmingly adding AI tools to their routine, not replacing search with them.
The growth is real, just not substitutive: GenAI web visits hit 9.5 billion globally (+70% year-over-year), GenAI app downloads reached 4.4 billion (+58%), and Gemini alone now has roughly 716 million monthly active users (+78%). ChatGPT’s own share of that AI traffic actually declined, from about 76% to 53% — not because people are leaving AI tools, but because the traffic is spreading across more of them.
Where AI is genuinely changing behavior: the share of ChatGPT prompts that cite external sources jumped from 1.6% to 6.8% between June 2025 and May 2026 — a real shift toward AI tools acting as a research layer. Meanwhile, Google’s own AI Overviews now show up on more than 40% of U.S. searches, meaning Google itself is the biggest deployer of “AI-generated summary instead of a link” behavior.
The bottom line: the “replacing search” narrative confuses adoption growth with substitution. The more accurate read for 2026 is that AI tools have become a parallel research habit that sits alongside search, not a replacement for it — which matters if you’re building a content strategy around either one.
